“retro”– backwards; “onychia”– nail
caused by ingrowth of the nail plate into the cuticle
common signs are
- redness and swelling of the affected toe at the base of the nail plate
- pus or white fluid on either side of the nail
- little to no new nail growth
- pain when pressing on the toe
DO NOT ignore these signs, it can lead to skin infections
Ways to avoid
- Avoid tight footwear (i.e high heels, narrow tip dress shoes)
- Wear shoes that are the appropriate length for your feet
Some cases resolve on their own, but if you are unsure, contact a foot clinic to have your toes assessed
Treatments
- antibiotics to treat the infection
- nail removal can be performed at the clinic with local anesthetic, to allow for proper nail growth
